Each chewable tablet contains Albendazole USP 400 mg.
Description: Albendazole is a broad spectrum antihelmentic, which is highly effective against a wide range of intestinal helminthes. Albendazole exhibits larvicidal, ovicidal and vermicidal activity via inhibition of tubulin polymerization. This causes a cascade of metabolic disruption, including energy depletion, which immobilizes and kills the susceptible helminthes.
- Hookworm (Ancylostoma, Necator)
- Threadworm (Enterobius)
- Whipworm (Trichuris)
- Tapeworm (Taenia spp.)
Dosage and administration: Adults of children over 2 years of age; 400 mg as a single dose in case of Enterobius vermicularies, Trichuris trichuria, Ascaris lumbricoides, Ancylostoma duodenale and Necator americanus. In case of strongyloidiasis or taeniasis, 400 mg as a single dose should be given for 3 consecutive days. If the patients are not cured on follow up after three weeks, a second course of treatment is indicated.
Side effect: Abdominal pain was the most frequently reported symptoms during short term dosing. Diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, itchiness and/or skin rashes were also reported.
Precaution: Blood counts and liver functions tests before treatment and twice during each cycle; breast feeding; exclude pregnancy before starting treatment. Albendazole should only be used in the treatment of Echinococcosis if there is constant medical supervision with regular monitoring of serum –transaminase concentration and leucocytes and platelets counts.
Neonates: Albendazole is not normally used in neonates.
Children: Reduction of the dosages form 400 mg to 200 mg may be indicated in children weighing less than 10 kg but there is no ground for a general reduction in dosage to children.
Pregnant woman: Albendazole should not be given during pregnancy or woman thought to be pregnant. No information is available on placental transfer.
Concurrent diseases: There is no evidence to suggest that dose should be altered in renal, hepatic or cardiac failure.
Drug interaction: No interactions involving Albendazole, either pharmacodynamic or pharmacokinetic, has been reported.
